When it comes to trendy New Year's diets and cleanses, juicing is all the rage. But for those of us who are always on the go, it's much easier to skip the peeling and grinding and grab a drink at a local juice bar, which seem to be cropping up left and right in the city. Check out these five spots—old and new—for juices and smoothies that will help you to feel refreshed, satisfied, and guilt-free.
Pure Raw Juice: Local foodies are buzzing about this revamped ice cream parlor turned juice bar that celebrated its grand opening just last week. Featuring warm oatmeal bowls and house-made almond and cashew mylk, we expect for this new Federal Hill spot to become a neighborhood hangout in no time. As its name signifies, Pure Raw Juice uses fresh fruits and vegetables to create unpasteurized juices, smoothies, and power shots.
Popular Pick-Me-Up: The True Blood juice blend mixes pineapple, beets, carrots, oranges, and lemon. Beets can increase stamina and lower blood pressure. 1401 Riverside Ave., 410-659-6928.
PlantBar Powered by Zia's: The landscape at Belvedere Square market changed recently with the opening of PlantBar. In keeping with the wholesome vibe of its sister restaurant Zia's Cafe, PlantBar offers create-your-own and made-to-order juices, smoothies, and acai power bowls. PlantBar bottled juices are also available to grab and go.
Popular Pick-Me-Up: The Daily Greens juice blend—made with cucumber, kale, mint, parsley, and lime—is a tasty way to make sure your body is getting its proper nutrients. Cucumber is great for your skin, and it's also good for flushing out toxins if you're trying a New Year's detox. 529 E. Belvedere Ave., 410-264-2364.
GrindHouse Cafe and Juice Bar: Known for its live music events and Sunday brunches, this cozy cafe has become a popular haunt for the local vegan community. The colorful chalkboard above the counter displays an extensive smoothie and juice menu including both create-your-own options and cleverly named recipes. Grindhouse also offers its signature bottled juices sold in bulk "juice packs" to help customers stock up for long cleanses.
Popular Pick-Me-Up: The Protein Pack smoothie is blended with strawberries, blueberries, hemp protein, walnuts, agave, and bananas. The hemp protein aids in increasing metabolic rate and energy, while the agave gives this blended treat a sweet, and healthy, finish. 2441 St. Paul St., 410-220-0166.
Corner Juice Bar & General Store: This Canton store offers everything from wildflower honey to crafty handmade jewelry, but it's the juice bar menu that truly shines. Options include fruit and veggie bases that can be paired with add-ins like cucumber, sweet potato, parsley, and pineapple.
Popular Pick-Me-Up: The Winters Balance Smoothie blends pomegranates, cranberries, dehydrated cherries, kale, bananas, ginger, and cinnamon with fresh green apple and pear juice. Raw kale is full of vitamins and protein, and sneaking it into this flavorful medley is a great way to mix up your vegetable intake. 2400 Fleet St., 410-844-1538.
Liquid Earth: If you made a resolution to throw back more wheatgrass and less Fireball this year, old standby Liquid Earth is a must-try. With a lengthy menu full of veggie shots, and all natural juices and smoothies served in a massive 16-oz. measuring cup, this vegan and vegetarian restaurant is a great place to grab a refreshing beverage any time of the year.
Popular Pick-Me-Up: The Ginger Cold Snap Cure is an invigorating concoction made with juiced organic carrots, granny smith apples, ginger, liquid Vitamin C, ginseng, and bee pollen. Vitamin C could help get rid of that nasty winter cold and bee pollen is a known energy enhancer. 1626 Aliceanna St., 410-276-6606.
